Active Shooter Safety Drill

Today, the Paulding County School District participated in a safety drill conducted by the Paulding County Sheriff's Department, as well as other local law enforcement personnel.

Go inside the drill with CBS46's Will Frampton.

The goal of the drill was to provide law enforcement with a scenario they may be faced with, in an effort to make sure they are prepared should a response ever be required.

Today's drill was an active shooter scenario. Law enforcement, along with 72 students from North Paulding High, gathered at that school's campus for the exercise. Paulding County's SWAT team, as well as other responding personnel, only knew it was a training exercise for an active shooter situation.

No live ammunition was used in the drill. Officers had simulated guns.
The simulation included 15 students who were injured, as well as 15 "fatalities." The injured students had mock injuries called Moulage. That is the art of applying fake injuries for the purpose of training Emergency Response Teams and other medical personnel. This made the drill more "real life" for those participating.

Part of the drill involved simulating explosive devices that would have filled the hallway at North Paulding High School with smoke so thick officers struggled to see what was on the other side.

Student "victims" were instructed to make the drill as life like as possible, including yelling at officers to help them, screaming in pain, and struggling to leave when they were evacuated.
