Maya Angelou once said, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
Do you remember your favorite childhood book? Mine was Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. I'm telling you. I loved the illustrations. I loved the dedication and love that Mike showed Mary Ann (his steam shovel). It is story of loyalty, despite progress, and a beautiful friendship. I made my dad read the book over and over to me so much that he wore out the pages. Him reading to me before bedtime is one of my favorite memories.
Now it's harder to crawl up in Mom and Dad's lap to curl up with a good book. Kids are reading on tablets and their computers. It's different than most teachers and parents. I wonder, will kids appreciate the smell of the pages of an old novel? Will they see a book's popularity by looking at the card in the back of the library book to see how many times it has been checked out? Probably not, but that doesn't make reading any less important.
You've read about the the myON program several times on this blog. As more students turn to tablets and computers for their education, it is imperative that we keep up with that progress, while still staying true to our roots - emphasizing the importance of reading.
That's why Paulding County Schools recognize students who turn their digital pages on the MyON reading program.
