1st Annual Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition

Today, students from Union, New Georgia and Poole Elementary competed in the first ever Paulding County School District Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.

What is a Reading Bowl, you ask?

The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl was founded several years ago by a library media specialist at Sky Haven Elementary School in DeKalb County. Mrs. Ruffin created a unique reading competition in a game format. Her vision was to have teams comprised of students from different schools compete to test their knowledge of selected books.

Reading Bowl contestants read 16 chapter books throughout the school year. With buzzers in hand, they answer comprehension related questions related to those 16 books. The books are the Georgia Award nominee books.

This is the first year Paulding County has held a district-wide Reading Bowl competition. It was held at Poole Elementary School.

Union Elementary took home first place, followed by New Georgia Elementary and Poole Elementary.
